Makiki Farmers Market

The booths stand right in the paved front area of St. Clement’s church, very near to Punahou School. The gigantic trees with their canopied tops cast shade over the gathering, so, combined with the early evening time, you’re promised a cooler experience. For many in the neighborhood this is a weekly tradition. They talk with other regulars and buy their favorites that are always there. Much of the fruits & produce is organic as well as locally grown. Usually there’s a decent selection to look over and buy. Many come specifically for the food that’s cooked right on the spot, like the popular Thai dishes, served up hot and delicious! For dessert there’s a few choices, but the Ono Pops are always a good way to go. They’ve got many flavors, some you’ve probably never even heard of before. There are some tables and chairs set up in the middle for diners, but they’re taken pretty quickly. A great alternative, if standing or curb sitting isn’t your thing, is to walk across the way to Makiki Park to eat al fresco. You won’t be the only ones there as there are those who like to dine as they watch the sun setting. Parking can be tough, because it’s right in the middle of an active neighborhood. Using the Makiki Park lot is usually okay and, if you arrive right at 5:30PM, when Wilder Ave is opened up for street parking, you just might find a place then. Not a big market, but definitely worth your while.
